Indiana native and New Lenox Lightning pitcher Peyton Pepkowski found her college softball fit at Loyola Chicago. After compiling a 0.96 ERA during the 2019 season and leading her high school conference in strikeouts, Pepkowski signed with the Ramblers back in November.
She's currently excited to finish up her senior year and move on to her college softball experience. Learn about her recruiting journey below.
Softball America: What made you decide on Loyola Chicago?
Peyton Pepkowski: Loyola is a great school for academics and their athletic program made me feel like I was a part of the family as soon as I first stepped on campus. I could tell when I went on my visit that the team works hard each day and they have goals for the future that they're striving for. Having a good team culture and strong academics was really important to me when looking at schools, and Loyola offers both. It also isn't too far from home, so if I want to go back for a weekend, I can easily do so.
SA: What was the recruiting process like for you?
PP: My coach from my travel organization suggested that I reach out to (Loyola) and send them our upcoming schedule for the fall season. I emailed them my schedule and continued to update them with game times, and as the season went on, I eventually got an email from the head coach saying that they were interested in me and asking me if I would visit their school.
The recruiting process was a very exciting time, but also very stressful, as I'm sure it is for every athlete. I wanted to make sure that I made the right choice, and I was nervous that if I didn't, I would regret it for a long time. But after I committed, I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, and I felt like I definitely made the right choice.
SA: Have you had the chance to meet with any of the other Loyola signees or the rest of the team yet?
PP: Yes, I went on a visit at the end of January last year and got to meet the team and some of the other recruits. They were all so welcoming and I can't wait to play with them.
SA: What have you been doing to stay on top of your pitching skills since COVID-19 canceled most tournaments and your 2020 high school season was postponed?
PP: I'm fortunate enough to have enough room in my basement to pitch, so I've been doing that a lot. I've been lifting weights as well and doing a lot of drill work to make sure my mechanics are perfect.
SA: What are you looking forward to the most at Loyola?
PP: I am looking forward to getting to know the team more and creating new bonds and friendships that will last for a long time. And of course, the view from the lakefront.
SA: Who in your life has been the most supportive in helping you reach your softball goals?
PP: Definitely my parents. They've done nothing but support me and do everything they can to help me be successful. I wouldn't be where I am today without their constant support, and I am so grateful to have a family that will do anything to help me achieve my goals.
