Since the age of six years old, Kelsey White knew she wanted to play Division I softball. During high school, she starred at Taunton High School in Taunton, Mass. and played elite travel softball with the Rhode Island Thunder Gold. During her recruiting process, the decision to continue her softball career at Villanova University came easy to her.

Softball America caught up with White, now a college freshman, about the recruiting journey that led her to the Wildcats. See below for her tips for youth softball players currently playing travel ball and going through the college softball recruiting process themselves.

Softball America: Why did you decide to play college softball for Villanova?

Kelsey White: I chose Villanova because I fell in love with the campus. It immediately felt like home. The coaches at Villanova are great and I love the team atmosphere. Villanova provides a high level of play alongside high academics in the classroom.

SA: How much did playing travel and high school ball prepare you to get recruited? How did these two aspects of your softball journey make you a better player?

KW: Travel ball helped me get recruited because (my coach) would put our national team up against other top-ranked teams in the country to ensure we were always playing at the highest level. This has helped me, mentally and physically, to get better at my game.

The four-hour practices twice a week were very intense, which I loved because it helped prepare us for what to expect in college. Our high school team is in a competitive Division I league, which provided the intensity and challenge every game and helped me continually improve both offensively and defensively.

SA: What age did you start playing softball and why did you stick with it?

KW: I started playing softball when I was six years old. I’ve always stuck with it because I loved to compete and fell in love with the game. It has given me many friendships and memories to this day.

SA: What are you most excited for at Villanova as you continue your academic and athletic career?

KW: I am very excited to form friendships on and off the field. I can’t wait to get started with such a talented team.

SA: Who has been the most impactful person in your softball journey to help you get to where you are now?

KW: My dad, no doubt. He has always been my No. 1 supporter. Since I started playing softball at a young age, he spent countless hours helping me get better whether it was pitching, hitting or working out. He risks his shins and ankles every time he catches my drop, and always gives me constructive feedback to make me a better player.

SA: Do you have any tips for players who are currently going through the recruiting process?

KW: Keep writing to coaches you are interested in and include a short skills video to also send to coaches. Use social media to your advantage to get your name out there. Going to college camps is a great way to see campuses, meet coaches and show your talent.
